By My Brother's Hands

Gotta be one of my favorite TCW arcs: space Vietnam. Seriously though, I did this in one day after I finally decided I wanted to make this image that has been sitting in my brain an actual drawing. I really like how it turned out. At first I was thinking this could be a cold opening to something, like an episode of a show. We open to a trooper laying down near a raging battle. It's dark, mortars and flares are the only sources of light. The shot goes back and forth from placing the focus on the trooper and on the battle. As we look to the chaos before us, the trooper is always there in the edge of the frame. The scene wants us to believe he is sleeping, but we realize he hasn't moved at all since the scene opened. We are introduced to this trooper at the end of his story, when the final line is read and the screen goes to black. Perhaps the next scene is him waking up in the same position, but in a completely different place, maybe the hangar of a flagship during a rare break. The scene I described before is only mere seconds long, but we see it, we know how his story ends. We go through an entire journey with this trooper, we see he and his brothers as cadets, we see him become a trooper, maybe an ARC trooper too, but we know it can't last. We know how his story ends.
